Pet Door Show’s Independent and Underplayed Trans, Non-Binary, and 2-Spirit Artists You Should Know in 2024

Happy Trans Day of Visibility!!! Today is dedicated to celebrating trans & non-binary people, and recommitting ourselves to the work that still must be done to end discrimination against trans people.

As you’re probably aware, there has been a concerted campaign of legislative persecution of trans people ramping up in the past few years thanks to far-right billionaire assholes. It is more important than ever to educate yourself and challenge the myths about transgender people that have been introduced into public discourse to aid that campaign. Transgender people have always existed, documented throughout history in cultures all over the world, and absolute binaries do not exist in biology. Being trans is not only natural, it is a beautiful sign of self-knowledge. Any time someone embraces and shares their true self with us, it should be celebrated with gratitude in the knowledge that it benefits all of us to embrace our true selves as well, and harms all of us to hold each other to narrow made-up definitions that inadequately describe our realities.

In recognition of the real challenges that transphobia creates for trans & non-binary people, Trans Day of Visibility is also a really great day to show appreciation with your wallet. As the host of the Pet Door Show on Shady Pines Radio (Thursdays, 2–4pm PT / 5–7pm ET / 10pm-12am UK), I exclusively play new music by independent & underplayed artists from around the world who don’t get nearly as much airplay as they deserve. As such, I have the pleasure of playing a bunch of incredible music by amazing trans, non-binary, and 2-Spirit artists, and I’d like to share them with you.

Below (arranged alphabetically by artist full name) are the Pet Door Show’s list of underplayed trans, non-binary, and 2-Spirit artists you should know in 2024, who I’ve played on the Pet Door Show this year. I am also including a bomb-ass Spotify playlist for easy perusing, but please buy anything you like if you are able (links provided).
