Pet Door Show’s Independent & Underplayed Black Artists to Watch in 2023

February is one of my favorite months on the Pet Door Show, because February is Black History Month, which is a great excuse to especially seek out and highlight music by brilliant Black artists and their bands.

On the Pet Door Show (Thursdays 2–4pm Pacific / 5–7pm Eastern / 10pm-12am GMT on Shady Pines Radio), I exclusively play music released in the past year by independent and underplayed artists with fewer than 5,000 followers on instagram. The result is that the Pet Door Show is a great show to find artists that you probably haven’t heard before, before they make it really big.

I have been fortunate to play on the Pet Door Show a whole lot of music by brilliant Black artists in a wide variety and complexity of genres, and I’d like to share it with you some of that amazing music. So, below is a list of brilliant Black artists and their bands (arranged alphabetically by full name, with social and purchase links) with tracks released in the past year that I’ve played on the Pet Door Show. At the time that they were played on the Pet Door Show, they had fewer than 5,000 instagram followers, but some of them might have more than that now.

I’m also including a Spotify playlist below for easy browsing (you’ll need to open it in the app to listen to all 204 tracks, I recommend on shuffle), but I highly encourage you to purchase music on Bandcamp or similar to truly support the artists. (Note: Péké Viré by Dowdelin and Heavy on My Mind by Tevis Hodge Jr are not on Spotify, so they are not on the Spotify playlist, but you can listen to them on Bandcamp: Péké Viré, Heavy on My Mind.)
