Pet Door Show’s Top 2023 Releases by Independent & Underplayed Latinx Artists
Here in the US, Latinx Heritage Month is celebrated every September 15 through October 15. Latinx Heritage Month (starting on the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, with Mexico and Chile celebrating their independence shortly thereafter on September 16th and 18th) is dedicated to celebrating the cultures, contributions, and communities of Americans with roots in Central and South America and the Caribbean.
On the Pet Door Show, my radio show airing every Thursday, 2–4pm Pacific / 5–7pm Eastern / 10pm-12am UK on Shady Pines Radio, I share my favorite tracks released in the past year by independent and underplayed artists with fewer than 5,000 followers, from all over the world. The result is a bunch of really incredible new music by up-and-coming bands that don’t get a lot of airplay, of all kinds of genres and geographies.
As a radio host, I’d be a total dummy if I didn’t use Latinx Heritage Month as an excuse to play some incredible music by Latinx artists and their bands, so that is exactly what I’ve done every year since the Pet Door Show began airing on Shady Pines Radio. All month long on the Pet Door Show, I’ve been especially heavily featuring new tracks by Latinx artists and their bands, and this Thursday October 19th (2–4pm Pacific / 5–7pm Eastern / 10pm-12am UK on Shady Pines Radio) I’ll be sharing a special Latinx Heritage Month episode 100% full of tracks by awesome Latinx artists and their bands. And yes, I know that Latinx Heritage Month is technically an American thing, but the Pet Door Show is deliberately always international for many reasons, so I am including Latinx artists from all over the world.
So, in celebration of Latinx Heritage Month 2023, here’s a list of my favorite releases of the past year by independent and underplayed Latinx artists and their bands that I’ve played on the Pet Door Show (arranged alphabetically by full name). All of these artists had 5,000 or fewer instagram followers at the time that I originally played them, but some — much deservedly — have more now (yay!).
