Pet Door Show’s Independent & Underplayed Black Artists to Watch in 2024
February, as we all know, is the month of lurve. No, I’m not talking about Valentine’s Day (plech), I’m talking about Black History Month! Every February is dedicated to “honoring the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history” (in the words of Gerald Ford), which also presents the opportunity to especially honor the accomplishments of Black Americans in every endeavor right now, today.
As you may know, my radio show the Pet Door Show (Thursdays, 2–4pm PST / 5–7pm EST / 10pm-12am GMT on Shady Pines Radio) is the place to hear amazing bands and artists of all genres before their big break. I exclusively play tracks released in the past year by artists with under 5,000 instagram followers, from all over the world, so there’s a really good chance you’ll hear a lot of new music that you’ve never heard before every single week. Every February, I seize the opportunity to especially highlight amazing independent and underplayed Black artists and their bands, but it’s not enough! Throughout the year I have the joy of sharing music by SO many brilliant up-and-coming Black artists, and I want to share them all with you.
So without further ado, here is the Pet Door Show’s independent and underplayed Black artists you should know in 2024 (of all genres and geographies, arranged alphabetically by full artist name, with social and purchase links). For your perusing pleasure, I am also including a an absolutely bonkers good Spotify playlist (open in the app to play all 222 tracks, arranged in the order below), but I encourage you to buy music on Bandcamp etc. using the links provided below to better support the artists. Also note that one track, Faso Bara by Yacouba Sissoko, is not available on Spotify, so check it out on Bandcamp.
